Telekom Austria shifts to VoIP, signs billing agreement with Redknee

February 20, 2014 Telekom Austria has announced that it has completed the migration of its fixed-line voice service to VoIP in its home market and signed a €4.3 million billing services agreement with Redknee.

The operator said it is the first operator in the EU to shift its fixed-line voice service to VoIP on its domestic A1 network.

The rollout was carried out gradually across the country and a total of 50 switching centres were migrated every week. In total, it took four years to migrate 1,480 switching centres servicing 2.3 million customers.

CTO Günther Ottendorfer said that the migration was “one of the most complex” projects in Telekom Austria’s history. He admitted that the migration resulted in the disruption of mobile services at off-peak hours.

Following the integration of the fixed voice telephony, the operator said it had signed up two vendors to provide additional components.

First, Huawei has provided its Multi Service Access Node to make traditional fixed line services such as POTS and ISDN also available within the IP network. Second, Kapsch CarrierCom has provided its Advanced IP-Softswitch to supply services including billing.

The operator said A1 could now rely on a highly efficient, leading-edge all-IP network infrastructure.

In a separate announcement, TA said it had signed a multiyear, €4.3 million deal with Redknee Solutions to deploy its real-time billing, charging and customer care solution.

The vendor said its solution provides operators with the ability to converge systems, including voice, messaging, data, mobile and fixed lines, to charge and bill for any transaction regardless of the payment method.

Further, group operators can launch multi-country operations quickly and with a low total cost of ownership, Redknee said.

TA’s Ottendorfer commented: “This strategic deal is part of Telekom Austria Group’s objective to expand our presence in existing markets by delivering differentiated communications solutions to our customers.”
